An Abbey Lakes Scaley 20 caught on a zig

An Abbey Lakes Scaley 20 caught on a zig

Tip of the month: March

The early part of the season on Abbey fishes in a very similar way to many of the popular UK day ticket waters in that the carp spend much of their time mid water and above. We have found the Fox Lake fish are extremely catchable when up in the water and if you have carp in front of you but are struggling to get bites off the bottom, don't be afraid to try some zigs rigs. Depth wise, a good starting point is two thirds of the water you have in front of you, but don't be afraid to experiment until you start to pick up fish. Once you find the level the carp are sitting at chances can actually come thick and fast. For a hookbait, small yellow or orange pop ups work well, as does a piece of yellow or even black rig foam. Lastly, don't fall into the trap thinking that zigs only catch fish in the daylight. Try one through the night and you could be very surprised at the results!
